Living in bright and sunny Redwood City, California we are able to grow plenty of fresh herbs and vegetables each year off our 30 sq. ft. patio balcony. In the past we have successfully grown:
- Lettuce (Buttercrunch, Romaine, Loose-Leaf)
- Cucumbers
- Italian Basil
- Parsley
- Mint
- Rosemary
- Cilantro
- Tomatoes
- Chives
- Bell Peppers
Here are some tips for success (no particular order):
Use good soil (we use a combination of Miracle Gro Potting Soil, Compost and Perlite)
Use safe/organic insect spray (we use neem oil and insecticidal soap by Bonide Organic Gardening)
Have a routine and sensitive watering schedule (only water if the first inch of the pot is dry)
Rotate or move pots so that they collect enough daily sunlight
Fertilize the soil half-way through each season
Some recipes we have created using our harvest are: Caprese Salads, Fresh Basil Pesto, Argentinian Chimichurri, Lettuce Boat Tacos, Omelets, Pizza, Rosemary Pork, Fish, Steak and more!
